Audience I Think This Magazine Addresses
Based on my analysis of the covers, feature spreads and table of contents I have put together a certain audience which i think this magazine addresses. And that audience is younger people. Their logo says "On a mission to empower young people."
After analyzing several covers I have concluded that their audience also includes open minded people because most of their covers and issues generally have realism portrayed through their action shots and gritty subject matter. Their table of contents attract younger people because their attention is not only drawn to the dramatic and block capital subheadings but also the bizarre image centered in the middle. Their table of contents pictures also have eye grabbing images that attract young audience's that get attracted by gnarly and unusual in nature pictures they have which use technical codes of action shots close ups.
The text in their table of contents is pretty militaristic and favors keeping a consistent theme. Vice uses a standard font in their Table of contents which is strange considering the contents in their magazine. Explicit out of the ordinary content with bland normal text, this is obviously done on purpose to create a juxtaposition on the two. The font also helps the reader since it's easy on the eyes and doesn't strain you too much from reading their lengthy articles.
This is obviously a call to younger people who aren't too great at picking up a good read but their drawn in more for the idea and the adventure than the pretty font, they just need something easy to look at while reading articles. And this goes out to everyone, you don't need an education to read vice magazine, you just need the desire for adventure. And their mission as a publication in general is to empower younger people, it says it all in their motto. "On a mission to empower younger people."
Vice's younger audience is typically watching VICE since VICE gives their audience a easy way to understand whats going on in the world by telling their articles in such a way that anyone and everyone can read their articles being extremely minimalistic but rich all at the same time.
I"m going to be keeping Vice's code's and conventions in mind when I design my own magazine by implementing action shots and eye candy, eye grabbing images that attract my audience in specific.
